Guidelines and Conversion Process

Standard guidelines for supported artwork

Supported

  • SVG file format. You can convert other vector-based files e.g. EPS or AI into SVG using Adobe Illustrator or online conversion tools.
  • Up to six discrete colors*
  • Solid colored strokes and fills
  • Transparent backgrounds
  • Simpler, graphical shapes are better. Very complex or detailed artwork will impact the online editor performance and may not print as expected.

Not Supported

  • Bitmap files: JPG, PNG, TIFF, etc.
  • Vectors with pattern fills, gradient fills, or embedded bitmap images
  • Vectors with more than six discrete colors
* Colors will be stripped from your artwork when it’s uploaded into the online editor. Once uploaded, you will be able to re-select colors for your artwork from the NB palette and extended pantone palette. This is so that we can guarantee accurate color fidelity when your garment is printed.

Advanced guidelines for artwork preparation

  • We support up to six, preferably four, discrete colors per artwork file. All shades of the same color in the artwork will be ‘linked’ and recolored to the same color in the editor.
  • If a transparent background is desired, no background colors or shapes should be added.
  • Solid colored fills and strokes can be used in the artwork.
  • Simpler, graphical shapes are better. Very complex or detailed artwork will impact the online editor performance and may not print as expected.

Do Not Use

  • Pattern and/or gradient fills
  • Embedded or linked bitmap images
  • Live fonts (text must be converted to outlines)
  • Art brushes
  • Clipping paths and/or clipping masks
  • Very complex or detailed artwork

Benefits of .SVG logos

  • We no longer need unique files sized for final print location
  • We no longer need unique files for printing on light vs. dark garments
  • Users can adjust colors within their logos using the Unmade tool
  • Users will be able to scale / rotate their logos using the Unmade tool
  • Users will be able to preview their logo files using a web browser

Conversion process

  • Open .EPS or .AI in Illustrator
  • Expand all shapes / text / strokes in the artwork
  • Ungroup the artwork if grouped
  • Click on one distinct color in the artwork
    • In the Select Menu, go to Same > Fill Color
      • Then create a compound path when possible
      • Repeat for each color
    • If there are more than six colors, work to consolidate shades to one fill color
  • Double check file to ensure there are no clipping masks or groups
    • An easy way to ungroup items in artwork is to select all of the artwork and press “command + shift + G” until all groups disappear from the layers panel
  • Save as a .SVG
    • File > Save As… > .SVG
    • Make sure “Use Artboards” box is checked
